CHAPTER ELEVEN

Honoria

“Why do you live underground?” I asked, genuinely curious. Normally, when you heard about vampires in books or movies, they would live in gorgeous Victorian houses, or go to high school as a senior for the millionth time, just trying to blend in.

Nic then explained, “We belong to the darkness. We’re not ashamed of who we are. Why should we be?”

I stayed silent, not really having an answer to his question. If it was even a question to begin with.

Nic continued, “Besides, pretending to be a teenager, attending classes and ‘graduating’ year after year,” he said with disgust in his voice, “gets tiring. Old. No one wants to do that forever. We’re old souls, stuck inside a teenage-looking body. Well, most of us,” he whispered, nodding back to where Henri had been sitting. I stifled my laughter, but with vampires having super hearing, I was pretty sure he heard me.

“And the reason most of us are stuck in teen form is because, well, that’s the age when we go off on our own, isn’t it?” he shrugged. “As children we need our parents, their help and their guidance. As we get older and into our teen years, we begin to gain some independence, trying to learn our way in this crazy world.”

Makes sense. He answered a lot of my unasked questions.

“Down here we don’t have to live a life of fear. We never have to worry about the sun, humans threatening us, or anything like that. It’s more … peaceful. And if one of us should slip up and begin to speak in an old tongue, an ancient language, no one bats an eye. It happens way more often than you’d think,” he said with a chuckle. “Maintaining the illusion we’re only mere teenagers when truthfully we are scholars, world travelers, seekers of ancient knowledge is utterly exhausting. Too much work to please those who wish us dead.” He balled his hands up into tight fists.

I felt bad. Even though I wasn’t one who wished the vampires were wiped out, I was still human. So, I was a part of their anger, to a degree.

It wasn’t fair.

“What’s this?” I asked, running my hands along what looked like a semi-hidden door in the wall. It felt warm, unlike every other inch of this place.

Nic stiffened beside me. “That’s nothing,” he uttered quickly, continuing down the hall. “Let’s move on.”

Strange. I wanted to know more, but I let it go for now and followed him. He showed me where each of the other vampires called home, the many common areas, and finally, we came to what would be my room.

“Here we are,” he announced. He opened the door and I let out a gasp. It was nothing like I imagined. The rest of this place looked … well, like a tomb. But this room looked normal, like it belonged in a regular old house. “I hope you like it. I, um, I picked everything out myself. And Selene helped me put the room together.
